94. MY LITTLE CONTRIBUTION FOR GORMAN SS 2011.

You might recall me talking about the shoot titled Carousel where I dismantled some foam picked up from Clarke Rubber and carved them into shapes. Then wrapped hair around them to form headpieces for the models to wear. Bespoke headpieces to the model’s exact hair colour and head shape. It’s painstaking stuff that kept me up for nights on end. The end result was better than I expected and I was eager to get involved in some more needle and thread.

I call this Kraft Work.

After a drunken chat around a kitchen table with the lovely Girl’s from Gorman (cult Melbourne based fashion label) I was enlisted to produce a Carmen Miranda style headpiece that involved fruit but done in a modern way to be shown at the upcoming Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2011, something that wouldn’t distract from the outfit and something that wouldn’t look kitsch.

Not knowing if this was just the tipple talking or if they thought I could pulls this off I set off to procure the best looking fake fruit I could buy and thought about how I could secure them on an unknown model’s head with no trial and 72 hours notice.

However, you can see the results for yourself.

85. Carousel.

I've been thinking a lot about this shoot I did way back in 2001. There's a bold simplicity in the hair that I have been trying to recapture.

81. Heads Will ... Be Illustrated.

As a hairdresser I spend most of my time staring at the backs of pretty girl's heads. No seriously, think about the time you spend in the salon getting your hair done telling your hairdresser all your secrets, the hairdresser stands behind you right? Anyway, I found these beautiful illustrations from Maria Gil Ulldemolins. The details are sublime.

75. OOH LA LA. BEST HAIR AT PARIS SPRING FASHION WEEK 2011.

For regular readers of Heads Will Roll will know that I love a little bit of hair braiding, so you will not be surprised to hear that my pick of Best hair at Paris Spring fashion week 2011 goes to Guido Palau for Alexander McQueen.

And here’s what Guido said “: “There’s a nod to paganism…and the idea of getting back to nature,” said Guido Palau of his basket-woven hairpieces, which looked like the sewn-together husks of one’s childhood cornhusk dolls. “There are a lot of artisanal straw elements in the dresses and collars,” he added, explaining the look”.

And also...

Also special mention goes to Orlando Pit for his inspiring homage to Bettie Page. It’s such a simple idea but so well executed. Makes me want to invest in some clip on bangs.

And lastly...

And lastly, to the model with the most drastic hair change Carmen Kass pictured above. Her big chop came just before the Balmain show by one of my favourite hairstylist Sam McKnight. But wait there’s more, then she had Guido colour her red just before the Louis Vuitton show.

71. Hair Hats

The fashion and beauty industries can take themselves too seriously sometimes. They too want you to take it seriously. But fashion, by it very nature, can be a fickle little mistress. It thrives on the pursuit of the short-lived. The desire to possess and be a part of what is new is never satisfied. There is always something on the horizon. Wearable art, though, claims to be a thing apart from fashion. It represents an attitude toward self-endorsement based on a desire to collect beautiful objects that are displayed by being worn. I mean why on earth do we spend so much time and money worrying about our appearances and by what brand is stitched in the lining? Isn’t it supposed to be fun?

Enter Nagi Noda and her “Hair Hats” like a breath of fresh air. Nadi Noga started as a graphic designer creating print advertisements, cd sleeves and book covers. Her skills and growing notoriety allowed her to start her company ‘Uchu Country’ and attracted the interests of major companies like Nike and Coca Cola. Despite her young age, she left behind an impressive variety of whimsical projects. Some examples include music videos for artists like the Scissor Sisters and Tiga, an extensive ad campaign and paper bag designs for Laforet Harajuku, and her line of Hanpanda (half panda, half other creatures) stuffed animals. Other works include direction of a TV advertisement for Coca-Cola with music by Jack White, and a collaboration with Medicam Toy to produce Nagi Noda of Be@rbrick fame.

However, we are here to talk about her project that is close to my heart. The Hair Hats. In the tradition of cutesy-kitch Japanese Pop art, or J-Pop as it is fondly known, these animal hair hats pictured above, are not made from fuzzy animal hair, but rather, are made from human hair wefts from India to take the form of animals. These incredibly detailed hair sculptures, photographed here by Kenneth Cappello, are not actually made from the models' own hair, with features like the eyes and snouts stitched on, which means that this might be a unique design that we may see on the market soon, or at least on the catwalks. Lady Gaga who loves a bit of wearable art was seen wearing one of Nagi’s Hair Hat designs for a photoshoot.

Tragically, Nagi died on September 7th 2008 at age 35, after surgical complications from injuries sustained in a traffic accident the previous year. The music video for “Hearts On Fire” by Cut Copy was the last video she made.

It has to be noted here that unlike myself Nagi wasn’t a hairstylist. However she took all the principles of the hair trade and made them uniquely her own with more thought than hair product.

Just Like Grand Wizard Theodore, a non musician who is credited for inventing “scratch” synonymous with dj and hip hop culture, sometimes it takes an outsider or non-professional to take a different approach to change a whole hair and beauty industry as we know it.

69. Smoke 'em if you got "em.

If you have been following my twitter account then you may know that I have just quit smoking.

It's hard to believe I wont have them around anymore. It's like the longest love affair I had and now my little white skinny friends are gone. But anyway, who said smoking wasn't cool?
