My award given to hairstylist Nina Butkovich-Budden for the Marko Mitanoski show for best hair I have seen at London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010.

About Nina.

Nina Butkovich-Budden began cutting and styling with vintage and retro ideas in mind for her friends before founding Nina's Hair Parlour. She covers a wide range of styles from the Belle Epoch to the Swinging 60s. She dabbles extensively in the Avant Gardé and the theatrical nature of style as shown in her hair styling and millinary skills.
Nina has acted as a period style consultant for The Young Vic Theatre in Waterloo and created styles for the Ray Davies musical Come Dancing for the Theatre Royal in London. She has worked with a range of photographers and stylists both for print photography and international fashion shows including the Life Ball 2008 in Vienna where she worked with stylist Danilo. She helped create styles for the dancers in The Kylie Minogue Show, Kylie Minogue's relaunch on English TV Channel, ITV in 2008.

Weapans of mass beautification... Big hair Part 1.

I get asked this question all the time... How do I get big hair?

Shampoo hair twice.

Use very little conditioner.

Rinse thoroughly.

*For fine hair spritz Aveda Volumizing tonic on 80% damp hair on roots and mid lengths.

* For medium to thick hair spritz MOP Liquid Mousse on 80% damp hair on roots and mid lengths.

Blow dry and style using a round brush.

Spritz extra product once again on roots, mid lengths and blow dry.

Extra points for scrunching, backcombing or hot rollers.

However that will be dealt with in a future post.

John Galliano's spring/summer 2010 haute couture collection for Christian Dior

I really don’t know what to think about a certain photo or runway look until I’ve written about it. It’s only then when I have dissected every thought that I can begin to see clearly. How I do this is by finding the reference points in my own mind and piece them together.

So here it goes.

My understanding of fashion, in particular Haute Couture, is supposed to be theatre, when does fashion become costume?

Dont get me wrong, I loved the hair for Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2010. This post is more about why I, as a hairdresser, like it. After all, this is a blog about hair.

First of all, the comeback of the snood. You know, that oversized hairnet thing that they're wearing.

Is this the very thin line that the hair (and make up) over shadowed the clothes? Or maybe I’m just looking at it through hairdresser eyes and cant distance myself enough.

Susan E. Meyer, in her book America's Great Illustrators did it best and most simply:

Nagi Noda- wild wild life

I know I’m heading towards some arty stuff here, however, as a hairdresser this is just awe inspiring stuff. It kinda makes me mad only because I didn’t think of it myself.

Nagi Noda (1973- September 7, 2008) was a Japanese pop artist and director born in Tokyo.
Among her works are the short film 'Mariko Takahashi’s Fitness Video For Being Appraised As An “Ex-Fat Girl”', and the half panda-half something else-hanpanda life sized figures. Other works include direction of a TV advertisement for Coca-Cola with music by Jack White, a collaboration with Medicam Toy to produce Nagi Noda Be@rbrick, and the video for “Hearts On Fire" by Cut Copy, it was the last music video she made.
Nagi died on September 7th, 2008 at age 35, after surgical complications from injuries sustained in a traffic accident the previous year.

Would you like to give me a hair from your head? 

I am currently working on an art project where I collect hair. I want one hair only from each person and anyone who wishes to may contribute to the project. It is important that those who give do so in their own free will. I also want them to personally pull out the hair they wish to give me. The hairs will be displayed in one or more exhibitions. 
In addition I wish to do performances and produce books in connection with this project. How the final result will be is not yet settled. I will take good care of the collected hairs. In case you wish to be anonymous and give a hair, that’s ok. But if you wish to give away a hair, and at the same time submit some personal information, that’s even better.

Super Bowl

Seems like the fashion world has caught up with the stylings of Karen O ever since Fever To Tell flooded the dance floor, my clients (you know who you are, I'm talking to you fitzroyalty) have been in a frenzy to get their looks in check with whatever the yeah yeah yeahs front woman is busting this minute. Anyway, where am I going with this.

I entered a competition to get free tickets for the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Melbourne show. It went like this.

Question:

What would you wear to get the attention of Karen O?

Answer:

Being a short lad I should wear some heels, 11 inch heels from Nina Richie to see Over the sea of Karen O worshipers. For some sparkle I'll wear a purple jewelled metallic knit cardigan and matching slim trousers by Sonja rykiel. Obviously this all sounds over the top but I believe the red lipstick by Chanel will pull the look together.

The mulberry manbag and Karen walker eye frames will stay at home as they are not conducive to the

mosh-pit or crowd surfing.

Weapon of Mass Beautification

By far the most used product in my kit bag. Bumble and Bumble Prep spray is an ultra-lite detangler that enhances the performance of styling products and quickly re-freshens already styled hair without weighing it down. This is my first go-to product on every shoot I do, as often models will arrive with unruly hair, or worst still, un washed hair. It’s like starting over.

Example: For the models with big hair on this post I Liberally sprayed Prep on dry and/or damp hair, combed hair, then spritzed volumizing spray over the top. Then styled hair as I desired.

Think of it as, what foundation is to make up. Simple put, it prepares the hair for styling.

I have already mentioned the amazing hairdresser Didier Malige before in a previous post titled New York I love you, but you're bringing me down. For his work for New York Fashion week. But did you know he has a book? Here's the scoop.

Didier Malige was inspired as a boy to become a hairstylist by grooming the cats and dogs at his mother's veterinary clinic. In the mid 60s he joined Carita as an apprentice, at the time Paris' trend setting salon. He then left to collaborate with Jean Louis David styling hair on fashion shoots. Working alongside several renowned fashion photographers influenced him to photograph his own growing family of cats.

All hail the carrot top!

I’m seeing red all over. No seriously, redheads are popping up all over the place, from Julianne Moore in the movie Short Cuts, here in the blog-o-sphere and in magazines Karen Elson, Lily Cole et al, and even in my day-to-day salon life. And let me tell you red works very well on editorials. Consider this, on film, what the eye sees on a brunette is mostly the outline or the silhouette, and with blondes the eye sees the details or the strands. With red hair you get both. Combine that with milky alabaster skin and bam! Killer looks.

So looks like my girlfriend/muse will be getting a new hue before the decade ends.
