66. Ombre, Ombre!! Dip Dye part 2.

Ok, so regular readers of Heads Will Roll would have already seen my blog post titled Dip Dye I wrote awhile back, if you haven’t check it out here. You can’t miss it, it was my 50th post. Anyway, I digress.

I thought this time I would explore the other side of this color of the dip dye technique that some hairstylist call ombre color, or graduated hair colour. It has a softer feel than the aggressive dip dye. Less in your face.

Here are some popular FAQ’s about ombre or dip dye hair color that I can answer.

Q. Is ombre or dip dye hair technique low maintenance?

A. Not really. There is a fine line between deliberate hair color and “I need my roots done” so regular trips to the salon is needed for shine and touch ups. Blonde hair often looks brittle at the ends so regular haircuts are mandatory.

Q. What is the difference between “dip dye” and Ombre hair color?

A. The dip Dye technique leaves a hard line best suited to blunt haircuts of any length. Whereas Ombre color is a soft blending of color from roots to the ends of your hair, say from dark to light, or the other way around. This technique is best suited for longer layered or choppy haircuts.

Q. Is Dip Dye and Ombre hair color technique new?

A. Not at all, it’s been one of the many techniques in the hairdressing arsenal for years. Like all things fashionable, it’s come around again this time with more gusto.

I’m interested in the natural and organic angle, was that something you’d previously been interested in?

I became aware of the added ingredients in food, body products and cleaning products about 7 years ago. It was such an eye opener; l was completely shocked at the number of chemicals in products l was using on a daily basis especially as l knew skin is the largest organ of our body and absorbs what’s applied to it and l didn’t want all of those chemicals in my body. Hair and scalp also absorb what’s applied to it so l started looking for natural and organic shampoo and conditioner and found several options although l wasn’t completely happy with any of them – some were ineffective, incredibly expensive, foreign made or ridiculously over packaged (such a waste both economically and environmentally) so l knew there was a gap in the market l could fill. After working for 10 years travelling as a sales & marketing manager for a global company, l decided to start my own business and create a range of body products that are effective to use, natural & organic, made in Australia, packaged beautifully and support local charities - denu is almost 3 years old and growing strong..

Can you speak a bit about your process, in terms of how you create your products, choose your fragrances and came up with the name of your company?

Denu comes from the word denude meaning bare and this is the idea behind the products – using bare natural ingredients.

The process involves lots of testing! I have many fabulous ‘testers’ (family & friends) who willingly test new products and scents and let me know what they like and don’t like in regards to the effectiveness, the feel, the smell and how long it lasts them, etc. l also have a great team that l work very closely with; for example, my scent lady (as l affectionately call her) created the denu scent that’s used in several products such as the hand cream and it’s based on feedback from my market research for a fresh, citrus base scent without lavender.

This is a question I get asked about a lot in terms of shampoo, which is “does this contain sodium lauryl sulfate?” And I understand most consumers are aware of the harmful dangers using SLS and we all know why other shampoo companies use sls, simply put, because it’s cheap. I noticed your shampoo contains olefin sulfonate. What should a consumer know about olefin sulfonate?

Yes, SLS is something to avoid as studies have indicated that SLS easily penetrates through the skin and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, the liver, the lungs and the brain. Olefin sulfonate is an emulsifier which, helps essential oils mix with water and is plant derived, from coconut. It allows the shampoo to bubble without the nasty side effects associated with SLS.

Sigmond Frued said “Soap is the Yardstick of Civilization”. Back in ye olde days people just used soap in their hair, modern shampoo was made because our water was becoming harder and regular soap wasn’t doing the trick. Today, our water is extremely treated and the customer is well practiced in the use of hair irons and straighteners. Is this something you consider when making a product for modern use?

To a certain extent, yes. l wanted to produce and only happy using a shampoo that is natural and contains organic ingredients where available. Is also must be effective on many types of hair – be that oily, dry, chemical treated, coloured, etc so people can reduce the amount of chemicals they put on their head and scalp. Whilst this wasn’t my main aim, the fact that my products work so well on any type of hair without using synthetic ingredients means hair will be healthier.

What are your future plans?

I’ve recently added a shampoo and body wash for my men’s range; the shampoo has a new specially created denu scent (my clever scent lady worked her magic yet again) which is an essential oil blend
of traditional masculine notes modernised with fresh citrus and it’s getting a great response with men; in fact l already have several women who have bought the shampoo for their partners and love the scent so much, they start using it too. Both of my shampoos are suitable for all hair types - so that works fine! Next l’d like to introduce children’s products to the denu range; specifically a no-tears shampoo/ body wash and lovely moisturiser. I often receive product feedback from customers which l really pay attention to as it often gives me ideas for new products..

Weapans of mass beautification... Big hair Part 1.

I get asked this question all the time... How do I get big hair?

Shampoo hair twice.
Use very little conditioner.
Rinse thoroughly.

*For fine hair spritz Aveda Volumizing tonic on 80% damp hair on roots and mid lengths.

* For medium to thick hair spritz MOP Liquid Mousse on 80% damp hair on roots and mid lengths.

Blow dry and style using a round brush.
Spritz extra product once again on roots, mid lengths and blow dry.

Extra points for scrunching, backcombing or hot rollers.
However that will be dealt with in a future post.

Little Tailleur

I used a wig for this shoot.
The key for making a wig look real is to bind the model's head as closely as possible.
Here is a brief "how to" guide.

  1. Brush hair
  2. Secure with pins flat to the head
  3. Wrap head with medical gauze while removing pins
  4. Tape gauze down
  5. Cover model’s face with towel
  6. Spray dark hair spray of gauze
  7. Gently place wig and adjust
  8. Secure adjustments at the back of wig
  9. Thoroughly brush wig.
  10. Cut to suit model.
  11. Use gloss to style
  12. Use fringe pins to add texture

Lost art of finger wave

This was originally written for cosmetiholic.com but didn't make it.

Finger Waves takes some practice to perfect.

1) Start with a freshly washed, damp hair and apply setting lotion or liquid gel. I like to use a light setting lotion such as AVEDA SCULTING LOTION. And part hair as you normally would, for better results part hair lower than you normally would i.e. corner of your eye brow. Now beginning on the side with more hair, using a fine comb, comb down from the part about two inches, pulling the hair tight along the way towards your face.

2) Place your finger above and parallel to your parting and over the center of the wave you are shaping. Now comb down about 1/2 inch away from your finger, following the natural wave of the hair, keeping the comb parallel to your part move the comb back away from your face making a ‘C’, or half an ‘S”. Make sure you comb every layer of hair down to the scalp. Then hold your first wave in place with a sectioning clip.

3) Now create the second part of your “s” curl by firmly combing towards your face again. Your index finger should still be firmly in place, again, making sure to comb all the layers of you hair to the scalp. And use sectioning clips to secure hair.

4 Repeat the process on both sides until you are about two inches away from your nape.

5) The excess hair at the nape can be curled and pinned into a flat ringlet with a little setting lotion. For short hair, the ends can be wound around your finger and pinned flat against the head, creating a pin curl. For longer hair, I like to form a bun to hold the non-finger waved hair. Again, use section clips to hold hair in place.

6) Place hairnet over head & blow-dry thoroughly until it is bone dry.

7) Gently remove hairnet and sectioning clips. Now gently brush your hair in the direction of your waves using a MASON PEARSON BRUSH or something similar. For softer results, keep brushing.

8) A light spritz of gloss such as BUMBLE AND BUMBLE SHINE SPRAY.

9) For durability, apply your favourite hairspray.
